Despite the more frequent features of LGBT+ representation in Korean media recently, the entertainment industry and public reaction remain as harsh as ever.

This is explicitly stated by the producer of recent BL drama “Love in the Big City”, Park Joon Ho.

In particular, in a recent interview, the executive producer revealed that many agencies of Korean actors strictly prohibit their popular actors from playing LGBT+ roles.

According to Park Joon Ho, these agencies only send their newer actors for casting, and draws the line at actors with some popularity.

The rapid homophobia in Korea is also shown through a recent case, where a famous actor got condemned for his choice to star in a queer role.

In particular, actors Jin Ho Eun (known for “All of Us Are Dead”, “Revenge of Others”, “Nevertheless”, “Sh**ting Stars”) and Nam Yoon Su (from “Extracurricular”, “Birthcare Center”, “Beyond Evil”, “The King’s Affection”) were announced as the leads in the BL (Boy Love) K-Drama “Love in the Big City”. The series is adapted from Park Sang Young’s best-selling novel, which was notably his first work to be published in English.

The story revolves around two roommates, one a gay man and the other a straight woman, and follows the journey of Go Yeong, who navigates a love story full of clumsy moments, societal pressures and personal growth. The plot touches on themes of love, denial and self-discovery as Go Yeong ultimately experiences a transformative relationship with Gyu Ho before circumstances force them apart.

Recently, the full trailer for “Love in the Big City” was released, generating buzz ahead of its October premiere. BL fans have been actively sharing the trailer on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), with many praising Nam Yoon Su for his bold decision to take on a gay role.

However, alongside the anticipation, Nam Yoon Su has also faced a surge of hate comments on his Instagram, where he has been promoting his new K-Drama. Many individuals, claiming to be former fans, have expressed their disappointment and disapproval of his decision to portray a gay character, filling his posts with homophobic remarks, emojis and lengthy rants.
